“Every adventure begins with a banquet.”
Taken from the first paragraph of The Hobbit by British writer J.R.R. Tolkien.
And so, begins the adventure of this new year, 2026.
January 1st dawns with a hangover and the firm intention of going on a diet after a succulent New Year’s dinner, of course, after finishing off last night leftovers.
I peer out the window with my binoculars to see if I can glimpse what 2026 will bring. I see a sublime landscape, cold for now, but with glorious sunrises that merge with the river’s mists.
This journey proposed by the new year has, as always, an uncertain cartography.
Compasses, maps, and flashlights are useless.
I started thinking about what would be essential to include in my backpack to begin this new adventure.
In the end, it turned out to be easy: a notebook and pen to write down everyday miracles, an umbrella for the inevitable storms, beachwear in case my soul is invited to set sail, a box of chocolates, and of course, my pills of humor.
To paraphrase Tolkien, I’d say, “Every adventure begins with a good dose of humor.”
So, before venturing out onto my path of abundance, and I mean those insignificances that makes life beautiful, I pray that my good fortune isn’t misguided, like that man to whom the fortune teller, upon gazing into the crystal ball, said:
“I see abundance, yes, abundance…”
And the happy man replied:
“Really? How wonderful!”
“Oh, sorry, I made a mistake,” said the fortune teller.
“I see ambulance.”
My little dose of good humor to begin this 2026 adventure.
And you, my kind reads, what will you include in your backpack?
