I’m invited to a party on March 20th. By the time you read this, I’ll be recovering from what’s known in my country as a “ratón” or hangover.

The theme is the nineties.

I confess I was a little perplexed, as I couldn’t recall anything particularly iconic in terms of music, fashion, or trends.

For this reason, I had to do a little research, and of course, the memories began to flow.

“Livin’ la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin came to mind, and from there, familiar melodies resonated, melodies I heard on the radio in those swarms of Caracas traffic: Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and of course, our wonderful Franco de Vita, Ilan Chester, and Yordano.

My search led me to refresh my memory on the geopolitical news of the time. I conclude that the world hasn’t changed all that much: wars in the Persian Gulf, conflict in the Balkans, the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Sombre similarities between then and now.

My research continued with a rather frivolous but necessary topic: fashion.

Ultimately, I needed an appropriate outfit for the occasion.

Even though I searched through American shows of my favorites from back then, “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Frasier,” everything they wore seemed quite ordinary.

It was truly an interesting experience to revisit the nineties, when I was a mother of two young children and worked full-time in my field of engineering. Many other family memories and memories of our beautiful Caracas resurfaced.

Now, I should mention that the party in question is the celebration of my eldest son’s 40th birthday. Yes, four decades since that unforgettable moment when I became a mother.

Regarding my “nineties” outfit, I’m sure that by searching through my outdated closet (today would be called “vintage”), I’ll find something appropriate to celebrate that beautiful day in style.

Happy Birthday to my dear son!
