It began as a decluttering exercise.
It continued with a voyage through exotic lands.
It ended in a celebration.
It was a long-overdue but urgent task, so I finally set about cleaning out my pantry.
My husband, besides being a citizen of the world, was a chef and had amassed an arsenal of extravagant seasonings, spices, and herbs, many of which were past their expiration date.
Expired as they were, closing my eyes and recalling those flavors from his kitchen inspired me to begin my journey, precisely along what is known as “the spice route.”
I embarked in Indonesia, then Sri Lanka, sighing amidst the aromas of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. I continued sailing along the coast of India, marveled by the essences of garam masala, turmeric, and cardamom.
From there I traveled to the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean, where I discovered rosemary, thyme, saffron, and basil.
It truly struck me as incredible that, from 1500 BC to the present day, the world has been economically and sensorially stimulated by these spices languishing in my pantry.
Of course, this cruise along the spice route, besides stirring up nostalgia, unleashed a ferocious appetite.
It was snowing outside—yes, believe it, it still snows in April—so I ordered delivery from an Indian restaurant.
After a while, the comforting dishes arrived.
I think I overdid it.
Samozas, lamb biryani, butter chicken, tikka masala.
As I mentioned at the beginning, what started as cleaning out my pantry ended up being a feast.
A feast for the palate.
Enjoy!
