Technology sometimes enables usages that were never imagined. Almost a decade back, when Google translate was in its infant avatar, two Indian journalists went to cover a chess tournament in Moscow. One night one of the journalists developed an acute pain in his stomach. Their land lady called the ambulance. The doctor spoke only Russian. The second journalist’s attempt to use sign language kept getting more and more bizarre. Suddenly the doctor indicated that he should open his laptop. He then typed in Russian and had Google to translate it into English. Now, language was not a problem anymore.
Today voices get transcribed and translated instantly. So, the politics of which is the dominant international language is no longer an issue. Neither is literacy. An illiterate carpenter can convince his client about a product design through images and an audio message. Audio communication on mobiles often transcends the literacy handicap. So hopefully this Alexandria will not be burnt or destroyed that easily.
